Worcestershire Lay Subsidy Roll, Circ. 1280

This database contains the lay subsidy roll of Worchester for circa 1280. As stated in the introduction, its primary value consists in the insight it gives into the state of the county at the end of the thirteenth century. It is also important because it provides much information on such things as the populations and sizes of the different villages, the origins of names of people and places, the growth of surnames and how they came to be formed, the number of Hundreds and the places contained in each, the boundaries of parishes, the number of women who possessed property, and who the inhabitants of the county were. Researchers with ancestors from Worcestershire and researchers studying the history of this county will surely find this database to be quite interesting.
