Leeds and Bradford, Yorkshire Area Directory and Gazetteer, 1853

This database contains a directory and gazetteer for the Leeds and Bradford area in Yorkshire. This area covers the cities of Bradford, Halifax, Huddersfield, Leeds, Wakefield, and all the clothing districts in West Riding. The clothing districts include the towns of Bingley, Dewsbury, Heckmondwike, Keighley, Skipton, Settle, and Todmorden, as well as about 600 villages and hamlets. This area is comprised of nearly one million inhabitants, who are primarily involved with the Woollen and Worsted Manufacturers. This work provides historical and topographical sketches for each parish, town, and township in the area. These sketches provide information on the population, trade, markets, churches, charities, public institutions, public officers, railways, etc. for each of these localities. Directories listing the names and addresses of the principal inhabitants are also included. This work is of great worth to the genealogist because of the nature of the historical and local information provided. The directory portion of this database can be used to pinpoint your ancestor in a particular time and place, while the rest of the database can be used to learn more about the time and place in which your ancestor lived.
