In 1939, passengers boarded a steamer named the Astir and headed for Palestine. They arrived at Haifa on April 1st and and many people did not have permits. After being held for 12 days, they were forced to sail even though they did not have the proper provisions. Sixteen weeks later, the owners of the ship left the passengers on a rat infested schooner known as the Marsis off the coast of Greece. They were eventually rescued and taken to Sarafand Camp. This collection contains the names, ages, professions, and residences of about 200 people who endured this journey.
