The State Coal Mine operated as a state-owned black coal mine and employed persons in Wonthaggi, Victoria, Australia from 1909 to 1969. Over the life of the mine, the town of Wonthaggi grew from a make- shift tent town to a thriving town, while the mine produced nearly 17 million tonnes of coal and expanded to nearly 5,000 kilometers of tunnels. Today the mine is open to the public as a tourist attraction and as a state park.

This collection consists of employee registers for the State Coal Mine. The original records are comprised of five indexed volumes containing the personal details of those employed by the mine between 1912 and 1943. Information recorded for each employee typically included name, token number, place or class of work, dates of employment, age, marital status, and number of children.

In each register was recorded all persons employed at the mine at the commencement of that register. Additional entries were added to the register as employees were hired, until the register was full and a new volume was required. Because of this, employee names are often repeated across volumes, and dates of employment recorded in a volume often pre-date the commencement of that particular volume.
