Historical Background

Over the years, eligibility to vote in England was subject to property requirements, but the Second and Third Reform Acts enfranchised larger numbers of men. The Second Reform Act in 1867 loosened the property requirements primarily for urban residents, while the Third Reform Act in 1884 extended enfranchisement in more rural areas.

What You Can Find in the Records

Registers of eligible voters were kept on an annual basis beginning in 1832. This database contains the register for North Nottingham for the year beginning 1 January 1885 and ending 1 January 1886. Included is the voter’s name, place of abode, type of property that qualified him, and location of the property. This may be the same as the place of abode, or it may be a rental or some other property. Names of tenants or landlords may also be included.
