The New Zealand Gazette is the official newspaper of the government and is produced every Thursday by the New Zealand Gazette Office, Department of Internal Affairs. This project includes the years 1860, 1870, 1871, 1873, 1882-1888, and 1890-1894.
Gazettes are full of material that can be of use and interest to family historians. They include notices about:
- bankruptcies
- appointments and releases of receivers/managers
- appointments and releases of liquidators
- meetings and last dates by which to prove debts or claims
- cessations of business
- partnerships
- land transfers
- charitable trusts
- friendly societies and credit unions
- incorporated societies
- changes of name
- justices of the peace
- native land court dealings
- native adoptions
- military notices
- nurses, doctors and teachers registers
- general notices
Because gazettes include such a wide variety of notices, researchers can find many ordinary people, not just government officials, mentioned in their pages. The gazettes can also be used to place individuals in a specific time and location, as well as putting people and communities in historical context.
