Located in southern Ontario, Peterborough County was originally founded as the District of Colborne in 1838. The jail was commissioned along with the county courthouse that year and completed in 1842. This collection is an index to the Peterborough jail register dating from 1876 through 1896. Details in the index include prisoners name, age, location, marital status, faith, whether or not they were temperate, the crime committed, the sentence, who did the sentencing and length of time served.

The original Peterborough jail register covers additional years (c. 1860–1905) and is held at the Archives of Ontario. Photocopies are available at the Trent Valley Archives.
