This data set includes records from the following three sources:

    1) The American Jewish Year Book Obituary Index - Index to over 3,000 obituaries of prominent Jews, 1948-1998.
    2) The Connecticut Jewish Ledger Obituary Database - Index to 5,000 obituary notices from this New Haven newspaper, 1975-2002.
    3) The Chicago Obituary Database - Index to over 8,800 obituary notices from an Illinois newspaper, 1994-1998.

    Chicago Obituary Database:

This is a database of over 8,800 obituary notices for the Chicago, Illinois area, compiled by Richard Hoffman. The index covers December 1994 through September 1998. For each entry, the index contains the deceased's name, date of death, and other information such as the deceased's age, birthplace, maiden name, and occasionally the name of the cemetery.

The American Jewish Year Book Cumulative Index of Obituaries

The American Jewish Year Book, compiled by the American Jewish Committee, is a review of the year's events relating to Jewish matters in America and other countries. The "mix" of material in each volume has varied through the years, but certain features have remained constant, chiefly the directories of organizations and periodicals, obituaries, calendars, and Jewish population estimates, both U.S. and world.

The American Jewish Committee has compiled a "Cumulative Index of Obituaries" from volumes 51-96 of this highly regarded reference work. The obituaries are mostly "Who's Who" type entries of varying length. Over the years, a small number of full obituary articles have been published about particularly outstanding figures. This index covers the years 1948-1998.

Each entry in the Index contains the Surname, Given Name, Year of Death, and Volume/Page Numbers. Full articles are marked by an (*) asterisk in the Volume column.

The Connecticut Jewish Ledger Obituary Database:

The Connecticut Jewish Ledger is a weekly Jewish newspaper for the state of Connecticut, started in 1929.

This database was compiled by Howard Siegel and currently contains indexes for Jan-June 1975, 1988-1989, and 1998-2002. At this time the index contains almost 5,000 entries.

Fields recorded in this database are: Last Name, First Name, Maiden Name, Issue Date and Page, Date of Death, Place of Residence, and Former Place of Residence.
